This new resource from CSV supports the teaching and learning of active citizenship in primary schools and comes in CD-ROM format with a number of downloadable PDFs. This makes for quick retrieval and photocopying of activities and related worksheets.

Our active citizenship model is based on five competencies, originally tried and tested in secondary schools and transferred seamlessly to primary as recent trials in schools in S/E England have shown. We believe that in order to become ‘active doers’ rather than ‘passive players’ young people can be helped through a 5-stepped process:

• Teamwork – developing confidence and good relationships with others
• Values and Ethics – learning about their own and others’ values
• Community mapping – recognising the need to support their local community
• Gathering and evaluating data – compiling information about community needs and priorities
• Decision making and problem solving – applying their values, skills and knowledge to a real community project

On completion of each competency, teachers can award a certificate to the whole class or to individuals and groups as appropriate. The toolkit contains a number of other facilities including an ‘Assessment’ file which offers general guidance on assessment of PSHE and Citizenship against the Five Competences, including checklists for Key Stages 1 and 2.
