Unitary Development Plan The Unitary Development Plan (UDP) provides the land use strategy for development in the Borough over the 15 years. It provides a planning framework by setting out a number of conditions by which Council assesses applications for development - whether for major commercial developments or for small schemes such as house extensions. In addition, the UDP identifies major sites for development and regeneration such as Barking Reach and Dagenham Dock. Certain parts of the Borough are zoned for different purposes such as employment, shopping and housing.
The UDP sets criteria to ensure that development is of a high standard and that the amenity of local areas is preserved, including residential neighbourhoods and open spaces. The existing UDP was completed in 1995. A review is underway which takes account of a number of changes in the Borough and some new Government schemes. The UDP is developed in consultation with the local community, and members of the Barking and Dagenham Youth Forum are currently being consulted. As a result, a draft UDP will be released for more consultation in autumn 2002.
