Qualities of a Successful Team

Discuss with all concerned how best to:

  1. Accept unorthodox solutions to problems/be adventurous
  2. Demand high standards of all
  3. Quickly communicate successes
  4. Celebrate
  5. Face up to difficulties
  6. Constantly look for improvements
  7. Keep everyone informed at all times
  8. Use everyone's networks to track down help and advice
  9. Welcome criticism
  10. Value people for whatever they can contribute
  11. Maintain high visibility
  12. Maintain a rolling action plan
  13. Remain optimistic when the going gets tough
  14. Establish ground rules for meetings and communication
  15. Regularly review how its all going
  16. Welcome disagreement - from chaos comes new ideas
  17. Make it all fun

Discussion of the checklist is a teambuilding activity in itself.

Students can also identify their own, preferred team building activities eg planning for a residential. At a residential they can establish good meetings practice, design quality plans, clarify roles and develop effective group behaviour.

The value of a residential is unquestionable in terms of team building. To gain most benefit, trainers with relevant skills and interests can be brought in to add a fresh perspective and create a safe environment for the social and emotional risk taking which lies at the heart of all strong teamwork.
